We are looking for the next generation of power performers. Napa County students ages 12 thru 17 are invited to compete in solo or duo formats. Showcase your unique artistry in any style or genre of dance, and command the stage for a chance to win amazing prizes. Whether you bring contemporary grace, fierce hip-hop energy or commercial star power, this is your time to shine, grow and prove you have what it takes to be a Napa Valley IDOL.

How to Enter

​

Eligibility: Students who attend school in Napa County and are between the ages of 12 and 17.

 

To apply: Complete the online application and click “Send.” Your application will go directly to E & M Presents.

 

Scheduling Your Audition: Audition dates, times, and locations will be listed here after November 15. After you apply, you’ll receive an email confirming your audition date, time, and location.

What to bring: Your music (on your cell phone) and anything else you need for your performance.

 

Good to know:

• There is no fee to participate.

• Your dance entry must be 3.5 minutes or less.

• You may audition more than once. Judges differ at each audition site, and your scores will be averaged.

 

Judging Criteria. Each judge scores on the following, for a possible total of 10 points:

• Technique: Precision and clarity of movement, including footwork and body alignment

• Expression: Your ability to convey emotion and connect with the audience

• Performance Quality: Confidence and stage presence

• Choreography: Originality and appropriateness of the choreography

• Musicality: How well you interpret the music and synchronize your movements with the rhythm

 

Semi-Finals and Finals

The highest-scoring dancers advance to the Semi-Finals, an open-to-the-public show on Saturday, January 16. The Finals follow on Sunday, January 17. Both shows begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center.

 

Prizes: Cash awards and prizes go to the top three scorers, plus a “Favorite” chosen by the Finals audience.

 

Find Your Comfort Zone

IDOL welcomes students with and without formal dance training. Originality, the joy of performing, and the experience you gain will stay with you for years.
 

Think carefully about your choices, and test them in front of a mirror, with friends, and with your teachers, coaches, and family. Many past IDOL performers have gained the confidence to continue pursuing their performing arts interests.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

​

I will turn 18 during the finals, can I still apply to IDOL Dance?

• Yes. If you are 17 when you apply and turn 18 during the semis and/or finals, that is acceptable.

 

Will there be a rehearsal space at the college before semis and finals?

• Yes. There are rehearsal rooms near the stage on the first floor.

 

When will dates, times and audition spaces be posted for auditions?

• This information will be available after Nov. 15 and updated as new information becomes available.

I have a coach. May I include my coach on site during auditions, semis and finals?

• Yes, coaches are welcome. If an applicant needs a coach, let the E&M administration folks know well ahead of time.

 

Will a Marley or tap floor be available?

• We hope so but don’t count on it. Let us know on your application if you need one.

 

What styles of dance are acceptable?

• In solo or duo format, all styles, all genres are acceptable. Please feel free to check with Evy Warshawski (evywar@gmail.com) if you have additional questions about the dance style you wish to present.

 

May I present original choreography?

• Yes. Or, you may present an excerpt of a work you have danced in a school production or dance influenced by television, the movies, YouTube etc.

 

What about music?

• If you are using recorded music, we will need an MP3 on your cell phone. If you are using an accompanist, please let E&M Presents know in advance.
